Hyderabad, May 14: The Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases hosted a major pre conference Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Thursday on “Disorders of Sexual Development (DSD) and Multidisciplinary Approach in Diagnosis and Management,” bringing together leading experts, clinicians and medical students under one platform.
Director of Medical Education Telangana Dr A Narendra Kumar described the Institute of Genetics as “where science meets clinical insight” and praised the institution for conducting the scientific programme focused on complex genetic and endocrine disorders.
The CME programme was organised by the Department of Anatomy, Osmania Medical College under the aegis of the Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases. The event began at 8.30 am with registration and continued through the day with scientific lectures, case discussions and hands on demonstrations.
The programme was chaired by Dr M Padmavathi and Dr B Vijaya Lakshmi. Organisers said the event aimed to improve awareness among clinicians regarding early diagnosis, genetic counselling and long term management of Disorders of Sexual Development.
Experts Highlight Need For Multidisciplinary DSD Care
Delivering a lecture on the “Surgical Perspective in the Management of DSD,” Dr Narendra Kumar highlighted the critical role of genetics and early medical intervention in sexual development disorders.
Dr V Subhadra Devi delivered the keynote lecture on the embryological basis of sexual differentiation and explained developmental variations linked to DSD conditions.

Dr Joy A Ghoshal stressed the importance of coordinated multidisciplinary care involving endocrinologists, surgeons, radiologists, geneticists and anatomists for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Rakesh Kumar Sahay presented a detailed lecture on the endocrine perspective in Disorders of Sexual Development and discussed hormonal evaluation methods used in clinical practice.
The programme also featured scientific sessions by Dr M Sujatha on newborns with ambiguous genitalia, genetic counselling and management strategies. Dr B Vijaya Lakshmi spoke on early diagnosis through newborn screening programmes, while Dr B Srinath and Dr Vijay K explained prenatal ultrasound markers in suspected DSD cases.
During the afternoon session, practical case based discussions were conducted by Dr T Sunitha. Participants also attended hands-on training sessions in Clinical Genetics, Cytogenetics, Biochemical Genetics and Molecular Genetics from 2 pm to 6 pm.
Faculty members, postgraduate students and healthcare professionals from various specialties attended the programme. Organisers said the CME created a valuable academic platform to strengthen understanding of Disorders of Sexual Development and reinforce the importance of timely diagnosis and coordinated multidisciplinary treatment.
