Intense Thunderstorms Expected in Hyderabad and Districts
Hyderabad and several districts across Telangana are expected to witness intense thunderstorms accompanied by heavy winds and hailstorms. Based on weather forecasts, these conditions are likely to intensify by Sunday evening, raising concerns among residents. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts cautioning people about the worsening weather.
IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts
The IMD Hyderabad has issued an orange alert (high intensity) for multiple districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds (40-50 kmph), and hailstorms. The affected districts include Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Jangaon. Residents in these areas have been advised to take necessary precautions.
Additionally, a yellow alert (moderate intensity) has been issued for Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Adilabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, and Jogulamba Gadwal. These regions are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph).
Several parts of Hyderabad have already received heavy rainfall between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. According to TSDPS data, some of the highest rainfall recorded in the city was 36.6 mm in Talla Basti, Musheerabad and 36.5 mm in Jubilee Hills, Shaikpet Mandal. Other areas such as BHEL Factory (Ramachandrapuram), University of Hyderabad (Serilingampally), GHMC Circle Office (Rajendranagar), Riyasathnagar (Bandlaguda), Rein Bazaar (Yakutpura), SRT Colony (Charminar), and Palton Community Hall (Amberpet) also experienced significant rainfall.
Thunderstorms Reported Across Telangana
Beyond Hyderabad, multiple districts in Telangana also saw heavy rainfall. The highest recorded rainfall of 38.8 mm was in Bela (Adilabad) and Laxmidevipalli (Bhadradri Kothagudem), followed closely by Sujathanagar (Bhadradri Kothagudem) at 38.7 mm. Adilabad districts, including Jainad and Mayala, also witnessed strong showers. Other districts such as Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Nagarkurnool, and Mahabubnagar experienced isolated thunderstorms, leading to concerns over potential flooding and damage.
Authorities Urge Caution
With thunderstorms expected to continue, officials have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow updates from weather authorities. The risk of fallen trees, lightning strikes, and power outages remains high, prompting emergency services to be on high alert.
