Internet, Sept. 13: iPhone 18 Pro cameras have received one of Apple’s biggest upgrades in recent years.
Apple introduced several new camera features for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max during its September event. The biggest addition is a genuine variable aperture for the main camera.
The new system also brings manual camera controls and improved video features. Apple has also changed its approach to image processing and photo customization.
For the first time, users can manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed and white balance. A live histogram also helps users judge exposure before taking a photo.
The changes move the iPhone 18 Pro closer to the controls offered by dedicated cameras. However, Apple has focused on keeping those controls within the standard Camera app.
iPhone 18 Pro Cameras Add Manual Controls
Apple has added a new Pro controls panel to the Camera app. It gives users greater control over how photographs look.
The aperture controls the amount of light entering the camera. A wider aperture allows more light and can create stronger background blur.
A narrower aperture allows less light but keeps more of a scene in focus. This can help when users photograph groups or outdoor scenes.
Users can also control shutter speed. Faster shutter speeds can freeze movement, while slower speeds can allow more light or create motion blur.
White balance provides another manual option. It helps correct colour shifts caused by indoor lighting or shade.
The new histogram gives users a visual guide to exposure. A graph concentrated on the left can indicate a darker image. A graph pushed to the right can indicate excessive brightness.
Variable Aperture and Smarter Video On iPhone 18
The main camera uses a 48MP sensor with a physically adjustable aperture. Apple says the system uses six thin, laser cut blades.
The blades can move between four aperture settings. The camera can automatically adjust the aperture based on lighting and depth of field requirements.
Apple says the feature can improve low light photographs. It can also help produce sharper background details in group photographs.
The company has also updated its computational imaging pipeline. This system combines several image processing techniques to reduce noise and improve detail.
Photographic Styles now offers texture and grain controls. These additions give users more options to create a consistent look across photographs.
Video capabilities have also received several updates. Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording to footage captured at up to 60 frames per second.
Time lapse recording now supports 4K resolution and Dolby Vision HDR. Apple has also updated Audio Mix to improve voice clarity and separate background music more effectively.
The iPhone 18 Pro also introduces an AI powered smart focus system. It can track a single moving subject through the frame.
The feature could prove useful when photographing children, pets and other moving subjects.
Variable aperture technology has appeared on smartphones before. Samsung used a similar system on the Galaxy S9 and S10 but later dropped it.
The feature also introduces more moving hardware into a smartphone. Durability and production costs could therefore affect how long Apple continues with the system.
For now, the iPhone 18 Pro cameras mark a significant shift toward greater photographic control on an iPhone.
