Iran Steps Forward to Mediate India-Pakistan Tensions
After the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, tensions between India and Pakistan have risen sharply. In response, Iran has offered to step in and help ease the situation, highlighting the centuries-old cultural and historical ties it shares with both countries. Saudi Arabia is also making efforts to reduce the growing tensions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, called India and Pakistan “brotherly neighboring countries” and said Iran is ready to use its good relationships with both sides to help them find common ground.
“India and Pakistan are like brothers to Iran. We have shared cultural and historical connections for centuries. Just like with our other neighbors, we care deeply about both countries. In these difficult times, we are ready to help build better understanding between them,” Araghchi said in a statement.
To underline his message, Araghchi quoted a famous Persian poem called Bani Adam (“Children of Adam”) written by the 13th-century poet Saadi Shirazi. The poem says that all human beings are connected, and if one person suffers, everyone else feels the pain too. Former U.S. President Barack Obama also quoted the same poem during a message to Iran in 2009.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia has been reaching out diplomatically. According to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke separately with India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
“I spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan over the phone. We discussed the Pahalgam terror attack and its cross-border impact,” Jaishankar said in a statement.
With both Iran and Saudi Arabia offering support, many hope that calm dialogue will help prevent further conflict between the two neighbors.
