Siddipet, July 16: In a rare development, Dubbak police have named a jail warder as Accused No. 2 in a major burglary case for allegedly helping a habitual offender secure bail in exchange for a share of the stolen property.
The accused, Gopal, a warder posted at Nizamabad Jail, was booked after investigators found evidence of his alleged role during the probe into a high value theft reported under the Dubbak police station limits.
Police said the main accused, Chikkudu Krishna alias Vengali Bikshapathi, 37, allegedly burgled the house of Chintha Raj Kumar on June 28 while the family was away on a pilgrimage. He reportedly broke open a window, entered the house, forced open a locker and escaped with 800 grams of gold ornaments and 5.5 kilograms of silver ornaments.
Following the complaint, Siddipet Police Commissioner Rashmi Perumal formed six special teams that tracked the suspect across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Investigators examined footage from nearly 500 CCTV cameras before arresting Bikshapathi and recovering the stolen valuables.
During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed that he had received assistance from warder Gopal while lodged in Nizamabad Jail. According to police sources, the two allegedly agreed to share the stolen property if the warder helped him obtain bail.
Police recovered 800 grams of gold ornaments, 5.5 kilograms of silver ornaments and Rs 1,300 in cash from the accused.
The warder has been suspended by the Prisons Department and is currently absconding. Police have launched efforts to trace him.
Investigators also suspect the involvement of two more police personnel. Another jail warder and an Armed Reserve constable are reportedly under scrutiny for allegedly assisting the accused in the past.
Police said Bikshapathi is a habitual offender with 63 criminal cases registered against him at various police stations across Telangana. He was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
