Hyderabad, July 16: A Hyderabad man was allegedly stabbed multiple times in a shopping mall in Utah, United States, in what police are investigating as a religion based hate attack. The accused has been charged with attempted murder.
The victim, Syed Sohail Uddin, a resident of Tolichowki in Hyderabad, was working at a kiosk inside Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Salt Lake County, when he was allegedly attacked on July 14 by Peter Michael Larsen, a US national.
According to police, Larsen repeatedly stabbed Sohail, causing multiple injuries across his body. Investigators said the suspect allegedly admitted targeting the victim because he was Muslim and reportedly told officers that he intended to kill Muslims.
Police arrested Larsen and charged him with attempted murder. He is currently lodged in the Salt Lake County Jail. Prosecutors have requested the court to deny him bail, citing the seriousness of the attack and the threat he allegedly poses to public safety.
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco said it is in contact with the victim’s family and local authorities. In a statement on X, the Consulate said it was deeply saddened by the incident and was providing all possible consular assistance while closely monitoring the case.
Meanwhile, Majlis Bachao Tehreek spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar seeking urgent intervention. In his letter, Khan said Sohail has been living in Utah with his wife, Amreen Firdouse, and their two children for the past two years.
Khan said Sohail underwent emergency surgeries after suffering multiple stab wounds and remains in critical condition. He also cited information released by US law enforcement agencies and international media reports regarding the alleged religious motive behind the attack.
