Hyderabad, July 28: Flood inflows into the Priyadarshini Jurala Project have increased following heavy rainfall in the upstream Krishna River basin, prompting authorities to lift the project gates and release water downstream towards the Srisailam reservoir.
According to Water Resources Department officials, the Jurala project is currently receiving an inflow of 32,000 cusecs, while around 30,700 cusecs of water is being discharged downstream to regulate reservoir levels.
Officials said the increase in inflows is the result of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past week in the upstream states located along the Krishna River.
With the flood flow from Jurala gradually increasing, substantial volumes of water are now reaching the Srisailam reservoir, where inflows are expected to rise further in the coming days.
The Water Resources Department has also warned that fresh weather forecasts indicate heavy rainfall over the Bhima river basin in Karnataka and the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Additional floodwater from the Bhima River is expected to join the Krishna, leading to a further rise in inflows at Jurala.
Officials said the increasing upstream discharge is likely to cause a rapid rise in the water level at the Srisailam reservoir, with heavy inflows expected to continue if rainfall persists across the catchment areas.
