The proposal comes amid nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, particularly the NEET controversy. Addressing youth concerns, Revanth Reddy argued that if citizens can vote at 18, they should also have the opportunity to contest elections at 21 instead of waiting until 25.
The Chief Minister has announced that the Telangana Assembly will pass a resolution seeking a constitutional amendment and forward it to the Union government for consideration. Since the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections is prescribed under the Constitution, any change would require parliamentary approval.
Political observers say the proposal places greater emphasis on youth participation in governance. By adding “Jai Yuva” to the historic slogan coined by former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Chief Minister has sought to highlight the role of young people alongside soldiers and farmers in nation building.
Supporters of the proposal argue that it reflects changing demographic realities and encourages greater political participation among young citizens. They believe it could provide a platform for educated and politically aware youth to enter public life at an earlier age.
However, critics maintain that lowering the eligibility age alone may not address the larger challenges faced by young people, including employment, education and electoral reforms. Some also point out that any such proposal requires broad political consensus before it can become law.
The proposal has also gained attention beyond Telangana because it directly concerns constitutional provisions governing electoral eligibility. If formally adopted by the Telangana Assembly, it could intensify debate on political reforms in Parliament.
The initiative also comes at a time when youth issues, including examination reforms, employment opportunities and governance, have become key subjects in national political discourse.
