Hyderabad, Sept. 21: A black stone Kali idol and several religious artefacts were stolen from Uttar Kalibari Temple in Faridpur, Bangladesh, according to temple authorities.
The theft occurred between around 10:30 pm on Saturday and 5:45 am on Sunday, The Daily Star reported.
The stolen items included the Kali idol and around 7 to 8 tolas of gold ornaments worn by it.
Small brass idols of Vishnu, Radha Krishna and Manasa were also stolen.
A silver snake weighing around 8 to 10 tolas, which was wrapped around a Shiva Linga, was also taken.
Police Investigate Faridpur Temple Theft
Temple priest Debi Prasad Chakraborty said the Kali idol was placed on a white marble Shiva idol.
He said the thieves left the white marble Shiva idol behind and took the Kali idol.
The combined structure weighed around 40 kg, while the Kali idol alone weighed at least 20 kg, he said.
According to the priest, the thieves broke a padlock before opening the wooden door.
They then broke an iron shutter secured with four locks to enter the room containing the idols.
Temple management committee president Kushal Chakraborty said the CCTV cameras were not functioning.
The stolen items had not been recovered, he said.
Police from Faridpur Kotwali Police Station reached the temple after receiving an emergency call.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Shahriar Mohammad Miazi and Officer in Charge Mahmudul Hasan visited the site.
A Criminal Investigation Department team also collected evidence from the location.
Mahmudul Hasan said several police teams were working to identify and arrest those involved in the theft.
The incident comes after another temple theft in Faridpur last month. Two brass idols were stolen from a temple in Nagarkanda, with police later recovering them and arresting four people.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Awami League has alleged that attacks on Hindu temples and minority communities are increasing again in 2026.
The party recently compared the situation with its allegations about minority persecution during the BNP Jamaat e Islami alliance government from 2001 to 2006.
Those claims are political allegations and are not independently established by the Faridpur theft report.
