Hyderabad: A 20-year-old youth died after allegedly falling from a vehicle during the Ganesh immersion procession near Khairatabad on Friday.
The incident occurred near Metro Pillar No. 1167 when the youth was reportedly trying to board an immersion vehicle. He accidentally slipped and fell, suffering fatal injuries.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information. They shifted the body to Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem examination and registered a case of suspicious death.
Friends Protest, Seek Probe Into Youth’s Death
Following the incident, friends of the deceased and local youths staged a protest on the road. They alleged that police personnel had resorted to a lathi-charge while attempting to control traffic in the area.
The protesters claimed that the youth was trying to move away amid the commotion and fear of the alleged lathi-charge when he fell from the vehicle. However, this version has not been independently established.
The protest led to heavy traffic congestion in the area as the Ganesh immersion procession continued.
Senior police officials reached the spot and spoke to the protesters. They assured them that CCTV footage from the area would be examined and that the circumstances surrounding the death would be investigated.
The protesters subsequently called off the agitation after receiving the assurance from the police.
Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the youth’s death. The precise cause and circumstances of the fall will be established through the investigation and post-mortem report.
The incident occurred as Hyderabad witnessed the main Ganesh immersion procession, with thousands of devotees and large numbers of vehicles moving towards Hussain Sagar.
