Kishan Reddy Highlights FDDI Global Role

Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy described the Footwear Design and Development Institute as a national asset that strengthens India’s footwear and leather sector. He spoke as the chief guest at the 5th Convocation Ceremony of the FDDI. He congratulated graduates, parents, and faculty on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Kishan Reddy said graduation is not just an academic milestone but the beginning of a responsible new journey. He praised FDDI for building skills, driving innovation, and improving global competitiveness in footwear, leather, fashion, and retail. Therefore, he called the institute a strong pillar of India’s industrial ecosystem.

He highlighted India’s position as the world’s second largest footwear producer. The country manufactures 2.5 billion pairs annually. The market value stands between 26 and 30 billion dollars. The sector generates employment for 4 to 4.5 million people. It also records exports worth 5 to 6 billion dollars each year. Meanwhile, he said this growth reflects India’s expanding global role.

The Minister also pointed to several government initiatives that support the industry. He noted the reduction of GST from 12 percent to 5 percent. He also mentioned support for MSMEs and the promotion of GI tagged heritage products. In addition, he cited the Rs 1,700 crore IFLDP program. He referred to upcoming PLI schemes aimed at modernisation, exports, and job creation. Therefore, he stressed that policy support is helping the sector grow further.

Kishan Reddy urged graduates to use their knowledge to empower communities and strengthen local industries. He also asked them to support women entrepreneurs. At the same time, he underlined the role of AI, digital design, and sustainable practices in shaping the future of manufacturing. He concluded by linking India’s industrial growth with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He called on youth to think globally while producing locally.
