- KL Deemed University receives India Water Foundation award for wastewater treatment
- Water Transversality Global Awards recognize campus water sustainability initiatives
Hyderabad: KL Deemed to be University has received the “Leading Wastewater Treatment and Management Model Award” from the India Water Foundation in recognition of its water sustainability initiatives. The announcement came during the Water Transversality Global Awards and Conclave 2026.
The award highlights the university’s technology driven efforts in wastewater treatment and water conservation. Officials presented the award to Commander Gurumoorthy Gangadharan, Senior Director Planning and Development at the university, during the ceremony in New Delhi. Shri Om Birla, Honorable Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, handed over the recognition at the summit.
The KL Deemed University water management program follows a 4R framework that includes Reduce, Recharge, Recycle, and Reuse. The system aims to use water resources efficiently across the campus. As part of this initiative, the university operates a wastewater recycling system with a capacity of 2,180 KLD.
The recycling system currently meets more than 54 percent of the water demand at the Vijayawada campus. It uses advanced sewage treatment technologies, including Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor and ARBiT systems. These technologies have increased water recovery efficiency from 53 percent to 74 percent.
The campus also runs 32 rainwater harvesting pits. Together, these pits support groundwater recharge of nearly 3.7 lakh liters per day. Officials say this step strengthens long term water sustainability on campus.
In addition, the university uses real time water monitoring and efficient irrigation practices. These measures have reduced building water consumption by 54 percent. Landscape irrigation has also dropped by 42 percent while maintaining a green campus that covers more than 10.6 lakh square feet.
Commenting on the recognition, Er. Koneru Satyanarayana, Chancellor, KL Deemed to be University, stated, “Sustainability today is a collective responsibility that extends far beyond institutional boundaries. We believe that responsible water management must become an integral part of how societies grow, innovate, and build resilience for the future. Through research, technology adoption, and responsible practices, we aim to demonstrate how academic institutions can contribute meaningfully to global sustainability goals and inspire wider environmental stewardship.”
The Department of Planning and Development works with faculty members and staff to advance the university’s sustainability programs. Earlier, the institution also received recognition from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Water Digest, CII SR, and AICTE for its environmental initiatives.
