Kolkata, August 9: A banner in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area warned political leaders joining the BJP against alleged extortion and corruption.
The banner carried a warning of “egg therapy” for anyone who joins the BJP and engages in extortion. Former BJP mandal president Sanjoy Poira put up the banner on Sunday.
Poira said the warning applied to leaders joining the BJP from other parties. He also said BJP leaders who engage in extortion would face the same warning.
According to Poira, voters in West Bengal rejected syndicates, extortion and cut money in the recent Assembly election. He said the BJP should not allow leaders accused of such practices to continue them after joining the party.
He said the BJP’s door had opened to leaders from other parties because of political considerations. However, he questioned the entry of leaders he alleged had earlier faced accusations linked to extortion and cut money.
Poira said the BJP should maintain a zero tolerance approach towards extortion and corruption. He warned that leaders involved in such activities could face public anger.
BJP leaders warn against illegal activities
The “egg therapy” reference relates to incidents involving arrested Trinamool Congress leaders. In several cases, people threw eggs at leaders while police escorted them.
Some protesters also shouted slogans accusing the leaders of wrongdoing. The incidents followed arrests on allegations that included extortion, assault, molestation and intimidation.
Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya recently said eliminating extortion would take time. He also warned BJP workers against involvement in illegal activities.
Bhattacharya said the party would take action if allegations of corruption emerged against its workers or leaders. He also urged party members to move away from practices associated with earlier political regimes.
The banner has highlighted tensions within the BJP over the entry of leaders from rival parties. The issue could also shape the party’s approach towards political defections and allegations of corruption.
Poira’s remarks represent his stated position and do not establish that the leaders joining the BJP committed extortion. Any such allegations would require verification through official investigations or legal proceedings.
