Hyderabad: Several Opposition leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, were detained by Delhi Police on Saturday while attempting to join a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest was called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital. Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was also among the Opposition leaders named in reports about the demonstrations.
Banerjee staged a protest at a bus stop on South Avenue after police stopped her from joining the gathering. She was detained along with five Trinamool Congress MPs, including Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen.

Banerjee was seen wearing a bandage over her mouth during the protest. Speaking from inside a police bus, she accused the government of mistreating the Opposition.
“The government is misbehaving with us,” Banerjee said in a video statement. She added that the INDIA bloc would continue its fight to strengthen the people’s voice.
Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party’s national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister, was also detained when he attempted to leave his residence to join the protest. Delhi Police had reportedly surrounded his residence earlier in the day.
