Hyderabad, June 4: Maruti Suzuki on Thursday unveiled India’s first flex fuel passenger vehicle, the WagonR Flex Fuel, capable of operating on ethanol petrol blends ranging from E20 to E100.

The launch marks a significant step in India’s transition towards cleaner and alternative fuels. The new WagonR is the first mass market passenger car in the country designed to run on 100 percent ethanol, supporting efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Maruti Flex Fuel WagonR Supports Clean Mobility Push

The unveiling event was attended by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting cleaner mobility solutions.

Gadkari said the government is also considering the introduction of diesel blended with 15 percent isobutanol as part of its alternative fuel strategy. He urged automobile manufacturers to develop solutions for converting older vehicles into flex fuel compatible models while meeting stricter emission standards.

According to the Minister, such initiatives can help reduce air pollution and strengthen the vehicle scrappage programme aimed at phasing out older and highly polluting vehicles.

Addressing the event, Gadkari noted that India now has the world’s third largest automobile industry and described the sector as a major contributor to economic growth and employment generation.

Representing Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company is investing in compressed biogas projects and exploring future technologies, including hydrogen based mobility solutions.

Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales, said Maruti Suzuki accounted for nearly half of all green vehicle sales in the industry during the last financial year.

The company said the Maruti Flex Fuel WagonR aligns with the government’s biofuel roadmap and is expected to support wider adoption of sustainable transportation in India.
