Indonesia/Hyderabad, Aug 15 (Maxim News): A massive earthquake has struck Indonesia. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia early Saturday morning, causing widespread panic. The quake damaged several buildings and killed two people, officials said. A brief tsunami warning was issued after the strong tremors sent hundreds of people running to higher ground.
Buildings cracked due to earthquake
According to the United States Geological Survey ( USGS) , the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded near the northern coast of Flores Island. The epicenter was located about 68 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth, so the tremors were felt strongly. Later, several aftershocks were recorded in the same area, including a magnitude of 6.1.
Many buildings were damaged due to the earthquake. Even patients in hospitals ran out in fear. Locals said that cracks appeared in the walls of some buildings.
Tsunami warning… Hundreds evacuated
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency ( BMKG) issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake. Officials warned people that waves of 0.5 to 3 meters were possible.
A tsunami warning was issued for East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara. This prompted people to move to higher ground in several areas, including Maumere on Flores island. Locals said they saw the sea receding. However, the tsunami warning was lifted shortly after.
Two people died.
Disaster management officials have revealed that one man and one woman have died so far due to the earthquake. Officials are collecting details on the death toll, damage to buildings, etc. Rescue operations are ongoing. (Maxim News)
