- Matrimonial fraud linked to stock trading promises
- Cybercrime police probe cheating case in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: A private employee from Old Alwal was cheated of Rs 6.3 lakh after a woman contacted him through a matrimonial website and allegedly promised marriage and high returns through stock trading.
According to the complaint, the victim works as an accountant with a private firm. He stated that he was approached on a matrimonial platform by a woman who introduced herself as Nandita Reddy. After the initial contact, the two exchanged WhatsApp numbers and began chatting regularly. This communication continued for nearly three months. During this period, the woman claimed she was originally from Vijayawada and was then working in the United Kingdom with a stock trading company.
The complainant told police that the woman slowly gained his trust. She allegedly spoke to his family members through video calls and assured them about her intentions. She also convinced him that investing in stock trading would help secure their future after marriage. Meanwhile, she projected herself as an experienced trader and spoke confidently about profits and market knowledge.
Later, the woman persuaded the victim to download a trading application. She claimed the app was linked to her company and available on the Google Play Store. Believing her claims, the complainant initially invested Rs 50,000. The application reportedly showed profits, which encouraged him to invest more. Over time, he transferred money in instalments. Eventually, the total amount he invested reached Rs 6.35 lakh.
According to the complaint, the trading application later displayed profits of nearly Rs 20 lakh. However, when the victim tried to withdraw the amount, he was informed that he had to pay 30 per cent tax separately to complete the withdrawal. He then requested that the tax be deducted from the displayed profits and the remaining amount be credited to his account.
After this request, the woman allegedly stopped responding to his messages. She also switched off her phone. Realising that he had been cheated, the victim approached the Malkajgiri Cybercrime police and lodged a formal complaint.
Police registered a case based on the complaint and began an investigation into the matrimonial stock scam. Officials are now examining the details of the transactions, the trading application, and the identity used by the accused.
