Lionel Messi scored as Argentina survived a scare to beat Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time and reach the World Cup last 16.

Messi gave Argentina the lead in the 29th minute with his seventh tournament goal. Cape Verde equalised before the hour through Deroy Duarte. Argentina then regained the lead early in extra time when Lisandro Martinez lashed a rising shot into the roof of the net. Cape Verde responded in the 103rd minute when Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a fine strike into the top corner.

Six minutes into the second period of extra time, Messi swung a corner that Cristian Romero headed on. The ball hit Cape Verde defender Diney Borges and deflected into the net as an own goal. Emiliano Martinez made late saves to preserve the result.

Cape Verde twice recovered from behind and forced extra time in their World Cup debut. The visitors frustrated Argentina for long spells with organised defending and quick passing. Kevin Pina stood out for his defensive control.
