Hyderabad, July 4: The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain across parts of Telangana after a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to strengthen over the next two days and bring widespread rainfall, the IMD said.
Heavy rain alert for northern districts
The IMD issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for Adilabad, Nizamabad, Jagtial, and Peddapalli. Moderate to heavy rain is likely in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Bhupalpally, and Hanamkonda. Light rain is expected in Rangareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Khammam.
Officials urged residents in low lying and flood prone areas to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours. The Telangana government has alerted GHMC and district authorities to prepare for emergencies.
IMD Hyderabad Director S. Stella warned that strengthening El Niño conditions in the Pacific could reduce overall southwest monsoon rainfall this season. Officials said El Niño may intensify through July and August and further by September, raising the likelihood of below normal rainfall.
Telangana recorded about 15 percent below normal rainfall by end of June. Central districts showed larger deficits; Warangal and Hanamkonda reported shortfalls of nearly 60 to 70 percent. The current system may ease deficits locally, but experts said the state could still receive less rain than average for the season.
Weather authorities advised farmers to plan crops assuming possible below average rainfall. They recommended contingency measures and staged sowing where feasible to reduce climate related risks.
