Hyderabad, AUg 5 (Maxim News): Social media giant Meta has come under sharp scrutiny after the temporary removal of a video related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with reports indicating that a Parliamentary Standing Committee has sought an apology from the company. The development comes amid growing criticism over the platform’s content moderation practices and accountability.
Meta said the video was removed due to a technical glitch and was restored shortly after the issue was identified. However, the explanation failed to satisfy members of the Parliamentary panel, which reportedly expressed serious dissatisfaction over the incident.
Meta Officials Meet Centre Over Content Moderation
According to reports, a Meta delegation visited New Delhi on Wednesday and met Union Information Technology Ministry officials to discuss the issue. During the meeting, members of the Parliamentary Committee reportedly questioned the company over the removal of the Prime Minister’s video and its content moderation mechanisms.
Reports suggest the panel has asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to issue an apology to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has reportedly given the company three days to respond. However, an official statement from the committee on the reported deadline is awaited.
CSAM, Deepfake Content Also Under Scrutiny
During the discussions, the Parliamentary Committee also raised concerns over Meta’s handling of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), deepfake content, and other shortcomings in managing its platforms.
According to reports, Meta acknowledged lapses in handling such content, though there has been no official confirmation that Mark Zuckerberg has issued a public apology regarding these issues.
Government Signals Tougher Stand
The Centre and the Parliamentary Committee reportedly indicated that social media platforms would face greater accountability for the content they distribute.
Officials are said to have argued that platforms using algorithms to determine the reach and visibility of content cannot be treated merely as intermediaries under existing legal provisions. The remarks indicate a tougher regulatory approach towards digital platforms and greater scrutiny of their content moderation policies.
