Along with the renaming of MGNREGA, the government has also revised important provisions linked to the scheme. Rural households will now be eligible for 125 days of guaranteed employment. Earlier, the scheme assured 100 days of work. Therefore, the increase is expected to provide additional employment opportunities for families that depend on the programme for livelihood support. At the same time, the minimum daily wage under the scheme has been revised to Rs 240.

Meanwhile, officials stated that the changes aim to strengthen the overall framework of the rural employment programme. The revised wage rate is expected to offer better income support to workers enrolled under the scheme. Also, the extension of guaranteed work days is expected to help rural households manage financial needs more effectively. The Cabinet decision combines both structural and financial updates to the programme.

The employment guarantee scheme was first launched in 2005 as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, commonly known as NREGA. Later, the programme was renamed as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to honour Mahatma Gandhi. Now, with the latest Cabinet decision, MGNREGA has been renamed as Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana. This marks the second renaming in the programme’s history.

Officials noted that the revised scheme is expected to strengthen rural economies and boost labour participation. They also said the updated provisions could provide greater financial stability to low income households. However, the core objective of the programme remains focused on rural employment generation. The scheme continues to act as a safety net for vulnerable sections in rural areas.

Later, the renamed programme is expected to continue implementation across states under existing administrative mechanisms. The Centre’s decision signals an important update to a scheme that has remained central to rural welfare policy for nearly two decades. With increased work days and revised wages, the newly named Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana enters its next phase with expanded provisions.
