Kolkata, Oct. 8: Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed Advisor to the West Bengal government’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
The state government issued an official notification on Wednesday. The appointment carries a status equivalent to that of a Cabinet Minister and takes immediate effect.
The notification said the appointment was made by order of the Governor with approval from the competent authorities. It will remain in force until further orders.
Mithun Chakraborty Gets Cultural Affairs Role
Chakraborty’s specific responsibilities as departmental advisor have not yet been detailed publicly. He is expected to take up the new role shortly.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced Chakraborty’s proposed appointment as cultural advisor in September. The announcement came during the foundation stone ceremony for the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town.
Chakraborty joined the BJP in 2021 after earlier serving as a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member. He resigned from the Rajya Sabha in 2016.
Since joining the BJP, he has campaigned for the party during several elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election.
