Mohammad Azharuddin Minister Post Sparks BJP, BRS Protests

Azharuddin Minister Post | Hyderabad, Oct. 30: Political tensions have intensified in Telangana ahead of the Jubilee Hills byelection, with the BJP and BRS strongly objecting to the reported plan to induct former cricketer and ex-MP Mohammad Azharuddin into the state cabinet.

The BJP has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission (EC), alleging that the move violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

A BJP delegation, including MLA Payal Shankar, former minister Marri Shashidhar Reddy, and the party’s legal team, met Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj Sudarshan Reddy on Thursday at BRK Bhavan.

They argued that granting a ministerial berth to Azharuddin before the November 11 Jubilee Hills bye polls could unfairly influence a section of voters.

Marri Shashidhar Reddy said the government must seek prior EC approval before any cabinet expansion during the election period.

“Appointing Azharuddin as a minister right before polling clearly breaches the model code. The Congress is using this move to influence a particular community’s votes,” he stated. The BJP urged the EC to issue notices to those responsible for violating the election guidelines.

Meanwhile, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) also criticised the Congress, claiming the move was a desperate attempt to revive its weakening base in Jubilee Hills.

He alleged that the Congress, facing heavy pressure, was resorting to “vote-seeking gimmicks,” including making promises to film industry workers and fast-tracking Azharuddin’s induction.

KTR remarked that Congress appeared to be in panic mode and that the upcoming bypoll would serve as “a lesson” for the ruling party.

He added that the Congress government had realised its poor ground-level standing and was resorting to short-term political tactics.

Though reports suggest Azharuddin may soon be sworn in as a minister following his nomination to the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota, there has been no official confirmation from the government. Congress leaders have yet to respond to the opposition’s allegations.
