Mohammed Shami Retires from Test Cricket

Mohammed Shami | India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket. He brings his 13-year career in the longest format to an end.

Shami represented India in 64 Tests and claimed 229 wickets at an average of 27.71. His record includes six five-wicket hauls.

His final Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. India lost that match.

Shami announced his decision through a social media post late Friday, November 6. Interestingly, the announcement came exactly 13 years after his Test debut.

“Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am taking the decision to retire from Test cricket,” Shami wrote.

He also thanked his teammates, coaches, family members and millions of Indian supporters. He acknowledged their support during both successful and difficult periods.

Mohammed Shami | A Memorable 13-Year Test Career

Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on November 6, 2013. He made an immediate impact with nine wickets in the match.

His debut match haul of 9/118 remained his best match performance throughout his Test career. He subsequently became an important member of India’s pace attack.

Shami earned recognition for his ability to generate reverse swing, particularly in subcontinental conditions. He also delivered consistently in overseas conditions.

Four of his six five-wicket hauls came in Australia and South Africa. His ability to strike with the old ball strengthened India’s bowling attack.

However, injuries repeatedly interrupted his career. Despite several setbacks, Shami made strong comebacks and regained his place in the Indian team.

Following India’s 2023 home ODI World Cup campaign, he underwent ankle surgery. Knee-related problems also kept him away from the national side for a considerable period.

Shami returned to international cricket in January 2025 through the T20 format. He was subsequently selected for India’s Champions Trophy squad.

However, he has not represented India in any format since the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. He continued playing in the IPL and domestic cricket for Bengal.

During the ongoing domestic season, Shami has already featured in three Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal. He has also been named in Bengal’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squad.

With 229 wickets, Shami finishes as India’s 12th-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Among Indian fast bowlers, he ranks sixth.

‘Test Cricket Has Been Special’
Reflecting on his career, Shami said every wicket, struggle, injury and comeback taught him valuable lessons.

“When I first wore the India Test jersey, I had just one dream, to achieve something for my country,” he wrote.

He described Test cricket as a special part of his life. He also expressed pride in representing India in the longest format.

“I am bidding farewell to the white kit, but never to the memories associated with it,” Shami added.

“Even though I have bowled my last ball in Test cricket, I will always carry the pride of playing for India in my heart,” he said.

Shami concluded his emotional message with a farewell to the format: “Thank you, Test cricket.”
