Internet, June 28: Mumbai Police arrested a man for allegedly distributing capsules containing a toxic substance during a Muharram procession and prevented what authorities described as a possible mass poisoning attempt. Police seized 14,900 capsules and launched a wider investigation into the accused’s motive and possible links.
The accused, identified as Faiyaz Premji, allegedly distributed the capsules claiming they were pain relief and immunity tablets to participants in the procession. Initial investigation found that many capsules allegedly contained zinc phosphide, a toxic chemical commonly used in rodenticides.
Police said several people reported discomfort after consuming the capsules and received medical attention. Officials stated that those affected were treated and are currently out of danger.
Police Probe Motive Behind Alleged Poison Capsule Distribution
According to investigators, the accused had allegedly procured thousands of empty capsules and a large quantity of zinc phosphide before the incident. Police are examining whether he acted alone and are investigating the intent behind the alleged plan.
Authorities said alert volunteers and quick police intervention helped prevent a larger incident. Public announcements were made at the venue advising participants not to consume unidentified capsules being distributed during the procession.
Police said further investigation is underway and additional legal action will depend on forensic findings and evidence collected during the probe.
