- Rats Bite Eight Students in Narsapur Gurukul Hostel
- Principal Says Hostel Lacks Space and Safety, Urges Action
A shocking incident occurred at the Telangana Tribal Welfare Gurukul School and College for Girls near Narayanpur village in Narsapur mandal of Medak district, where rats attacked and injured eight intermediate students on Friday. The rats reportedly bit the legs of the students while they were asleep in the hostel, creating panic among the residents.
The affected students — identified as Nikita, Jyoti, Usha, Geetanjali, Sandhya, Aswitha, and two others — were shifted to the Narsapur Area Government Hospital soon after the incident. They received first aid and treatment for injuries and skin allergies caused by the attack. The incident has raised serious concerns about hygiene and living conditions in Gurukul hostels across Telangana.
Speaking on the issue, the school principal, Lalita Devi, admitted that the hostel faces a persistent rat infestation problem. She said, “Rats are crawling on me at night, not only on students.” Revealing the depth of the problem, she added that besides rats, monkeys have scratched several students.
The principal further explained that 540 students are currently housed in the hostel, which lacks adequate space and basic facilities. “Rats are entering frequently because the hostel is located amid fields and forested surroundings,” she said. “I’m experiencing the pain of these rats myself and do not need to mention the students specifically.”
Lalita Devi also expressed grief that three snakes had entered the premises just a day before and were killed. The repeated intrusion of animals highlights the urgent need for immediate preventive measures and improved infrastructure.
The incident has drawn criticism from parents and locals, who demanded that the education department take swift action to ensure safety, proper maintenance, and pest control in all Gurukul hostels across the state.
