Egg prices fall sharply in Telangana due to export disruptions
Iran Israel conflict impacts exports, farmers face heavy losses
Hyderabad, March 18: Egg prices have fallen sharply across Telangana as export disruptions linked to the Iran Israel conflict hit the market. The decline has helped consumers. However, poultry farmers are facing losses due to unsold stock piling up.
India exports lakhs of eggs ежедневно to West Asian countries. However, exports have slowed significantly after the conflict began. This has created a surplus in the domestic market. Therefore, prices have dropped across both retail and wholesale segments.
Egg prices fall sharply as supply rises in domestic market
In the first week of February, eggs sold at Rs 7.50 to Rs 8 each in retail markets. Now, prices have dropped to around Rs 5 per egg. Meanwhile, wholesale prices have also declined. They fell from Rs 4.50 per egg a fortnight ago to Rs 4 at present.
Apart from export issues, rising temperatures have also affected demand. Egg consumption usually drops during summer. As a result, demand has weakened further, adding pressure on prices. Last summer, wholesale prices ranged between Rs 5 and Rs 6 per egg, while retail prices stayed between Rs 6 and Rs 6.50.
However, the sharper decline this year is mainly due to export disruptions caused by the conflict. India usually exports around 75 lakh eggs ежедневно to Gulf countries. These include the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar. Now, sea and air transport services have been disrupted, affecting shipments.
In the erstwhile Karimnagar district, around 75 lakh eggs are produced ежедневно. Of this, nearly 40 lakh eggs come from Jagtial district. The remaining 35 lakh are produced in Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Rajanna Sircilla districts.
Meanwhile, farmers continue to struggle as supply exceeds demand. The situation remains uncertain as export channels are yet to stabilise.
