Lucknow, August 29: Seven bodies swept away by severe flash floods in Nepal have surfaced in rivers across Uttar Pradesh’s border districts, officials said.
The bodies were found in Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts. Both districts share a border with Nepal’s Chitwan region.
Local authorities recovered four bodies from rivers in Maharajganj. Officials found three more bodies along riverbanks in Kushinagar.
Police suspect that heavy rainfall and flash floods in Nepal swept the bodies downstream. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased.
Officials have started coordinating with their counterparts in Nepal to identify the bodies. The investigation also continues to establish their exact origin and circumstances of death.
The discovery has raised concerns along the border as Nepal continues to deal with the impact of severe flooding.
The Bhotekoshi River originates in Tibet and enters Nepal. It later becomes part of the Trishuli river system.
The river eventually joins the Kali Gandaki at Devghat. The combined river then forms the Gandaki, which enters India before joining the Ganga.
Officials believe this river network could have carried the bodies from Nepal into Indian territory. The flow of floodwaters may have transported them across the international border.
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh are now working with Nepalese officials to establish the identities of the deceased. They are also examining available information to determine whether the victims belonged to Nepal or other areas.
Meanwhile, local authorities have recovered and secured all seven bodies for identification and further investigation.
The incident highlights the cross border impact of severe flooding in the region. River systems connecting Nepal and northern India can carry floodwater and debris across national boundaries during extreme weather events.
