- Hyderabad police, FRRO coordinate to deport overstaying Nigerian
- H-NEW identifies illegal resident with alleged drug trafficking links
A Nigerian national who had been living in Hyderabad illegally for more than ten years was deported to his home country after a joint operation by the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
The man, identified as Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro, also known by the aliases Hopy Cup and Jeksa, was apprehended following surveillance by H-NEW based on credible intelligence.
Officials said Okoro, 43, entered India in 2012 on a business visa to engage in the garment trade. After his visa and passport expired, he continued living in the country and frequently moved between Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Police sources indicated that during this period, Okoro allegedly maintained ties with drug traffickers operating in the city’s nightlife and peddling circuits. Although narcotics were not found in his possession at the time of his arrest, investigators confirmed his suspected role in supply networks.
“He was moving around suspiciously in Asif Nagar limits when our team intercepted him. His travel documents were long expired, and his details were forwarded to FRRO for verification,” H-NEW officials stated.
The deportation process was completed after verification confirmed his extended illegal stay and past record of drug links. Immigration and police authorities coordinated swiftly to ensure his removal from the country.
According to Hyderabad Police, the H-NEW unit has deported 22 foreigners residing illegally in the city since its formation, 10 of them in the current year. Many had entered on business or student visas but overstayed and became involved in illegal activities, including narcotics trading.
A senior police officer said such individuals exploit the city’s urban anonymity and youth-driven drug demand, making it difficult to dismantle their networks. The latest deportation drive was conducted under the supervision of Inspector S Bala Swamy and Sub-Inspector B Manoj Kumar, supported by H-NEW personnel and FRRO officials.
