No Muslim In Telangana Cabinet, No Faith In Congress: Shaik Abdullah Sohail

· BRS distributes pamphlets highlighting Muslim exclusion after Friday prayers

Hyderabad, June 20: BRS senior leader Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Congress government, accusing it of deceiving the Muslim community that played a decisive role in bringing it to power in the 2023 Assembly elections.

Coinciding with the birthday celebrations of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi observed a day earlier, BRS workers distributed pamphlets across several Muslim localities after Friday prayers today. These pamphlets ridiculed Rahul Gandhi’s slogan of social justice, alleging that it stood exposed by the Congress government’s treatment of Muslims in Telangana.

Addressing media persons, Abdullah Sohail said that even after 18 months in power, the Congress government has failed to deliver on any of its promises to the Muslim community. “We feel abandoned, humiliated, and used – with no representation in government, no delivery of welfare schemes, and no respect for our identity,” he said.

Abdullah Sohail pointed out that this is the first time since 1952 that Muslims have been completely excluded from the Telangana Cabinet. “Forget ministers—there is no Muslim voice even in the Legislative Assembly, Lok Sabha, or Rajya Sabha from Telangana. Among more than 50 government corporations and institutions, only symbolic and insignificant chairmanships have been given to Muslims. None of them hold real decision-making authority,” he said, calling it a historic betrayal of trust.

He asserted that the exclusion was not merely symbolic, but reflective of a deeper systemic disregard. “Muslims, who voted en masse for Congress in the hope of justice and empowerment, have now been sidelined. Their welfare is no longer a priority, their voices are ignored, and their presence is being erased from public affairs,” he said.

Sohail reminded that under the BRS regime, a Muslim leader, Mohammed Mahmood Ali, was made Deputy Chief Minister and later Home Minister—two of the most significant posts. Former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had also appointed multiple Muslim leaders to influential nominated positions. In contrast, he said, the Congress government had completely erased the political importance of Muslims, who constitute nearly 15% of Telangana’s population.

He criticised the Congress for not implementing its own Minorities Declaration released before the Assembly elections. Terming it a “fraudulent election manifesto,” he said the Declaration promised 12 key measures, including a Rs 4,000 crore minority welfare budget with 100% utilisation, Rs 1,000 crore annually for loans to youth and women, graveyard land protection, and a caste census. “Eighteen months have passed and not a single promise has been fulfilled,” Sohail alleged.

The BRS leader accused the Congress of quietly scrapping crucial welfare schemes for minorities. “The much-publicised Abdul Kalam Taufa-e-Taleem Scheme was never launched. The Rs 1,000 crore annual loan scheme for unemployed minority youth and women has seen zero disbursal. Even the Shaadi Mubarak scheme, which offers financial assistance for marriages, has been weakened. Out of the Rs 650 crore allocated, only Rs 282 crore was spent,” he said.

Raising concern over rising insecurity, Sohail cited several communal incidents over the last 18 months, including the demolition of historic mosques like the Qutub Shahi Masjid in Moinabad, riots in Sangareddy, and attacks on Muslim youth in Suryapet, Nizamabad, and other districts. He also referred to the assault on Muslim girls offering Namaz in Wanaparthy and large-scale communal riots in Jainoor. “Not once did the Chief Minister or any Congress minister visit the victims or issue a public statement of condemnation. Their silence has emboldened the attackers,” he charged.

He further criticised the Congress government’s priorities during communal unrest. “When Muslims were under attack during Bakrid, the Chief Minister did not convene a meeting to stop the violence. Instead, he held a review to announce the establishment of cow shelters. That timing sent a dangerous and insensitive message,” Sohail said.

Abdullah Sohail also slammed the government for awarding the controversial film Razakar, produced by BJP leader Gudur Narayana Reddy, as the ‘Best Historical Film’. “This was a propaganda film that demonised Muslims before the elections. It flopped miserably at the box office. Yet the Congress government rewarded it. What kind of secularism is this?” he asked.

Further, he said that Gaddar was a staunch secular icon, and presenting an award named after him to a communal film was not only inappropriate but also a grave insult to Gaddar’s legacy. He warned the Congress party. “This is not just poor governance. This is a betrayal of historic proportions. The Congress used Muslims as vote banks and then discarded them. The community is watching closely. If these issues are not addressed urgently, this growing disillusionment will reshape Telangana’s political landscape in ways the Congress may not anticipate,” Sohail said. (Maxim News)
