Ola, Uber, and Rapido Drivers to Boycott Hyderabad Airport Trips Over Low Fares

Hyderabad: Drivers for Ola, Uber, and Rapido cabs have announced plans to boycott trips to Hyderabad’s airport in response to low fare rates set by the ride-hailing platforms. The decision comes as part of a larger campaign launched by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), which claims the current fare structure is severely affecting the livelihoods of drivers.

The Issue with Low Fares

According to the TGPWU, the reduced fares imposed by the ride-sharing companies have significantly impacted the earnings of cab drivers, making it difficult for them to cover their costs and sustain their businesses.

Despite multiple appeals to both the government and the transport department to create a fair and uniform fare structure, the union claims that no meaningful action has been taken to address the issue. As a result, drivers are now refusing airport trips until their demands for fair compensation are met.

What the Union is Demanding

Shaik Salauddin, the president of TGPWU, voiced the union’s concerns, saying: “Our members have long raised concerns about the exploitative fare structures. These low fares not only affect driver earnings but also undermine their time and effort. The government must step in and implement a uniform fare policy that’s fair for both drivers and passengers.”

Objectives Behind the Boycott

The main goal of the TGPWU campaign is to push for a revised fare structure that benefits drivers. The union’s boycott of airport trips is a direct action aimed at highlighting their concerns and forcing the aggregators to address the issue.

The campaign also aims to raise awareness among passengers about the financial challenges faced by gig workers and drivers, many of whom are struggling with rising costs and low earnings.

Additionally, the TGPWU is calling for government intervention to regulate the pricing policies of ride-hailing platforms. The union believes that without standardized pricing, drivers will continue to face financial hardship and the services provided to passengers will suffer.

A Call for Support
In the face of these challenges, the TGPWU is urging both drivers and the public to support the movement for fair pay and better treatment of gig and platform workers. By standing together, the union hopes to ensure that ride-hailing platforms implement a pricing model that reflects the true cost of service, helping to provide a more sustainable livelihood for drivers.
