Srinagar, Sept. 16: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged the BJP to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in Parliament.
Abdullah said the BJP should bring the bill before Parliament if it has enough numbers to pass it.
He questioned why the party was pursuing the UCC through individual states.
“If you have the numbers, bring it to Parliament. Why are you doing it through different states?” Abdullah said.
He also referred to reported differences among BJP allies over the proposal.
According to Abdullah, Janata Dal (United) has indicated that the UCC would not be implemented in Bihar.

Abdullah said the BJP should not try to introduce the UCC “through the backdoor”.
He also questioned whether the law could be called universal if only BJP ruled states implemented it.
“The whole country is not a BJP ruled state,” Abdullah said.
He pointed out that several states and Union Territories are not governed by the BJP.
Therefore, he argued that the UCC should not be decided separately by individual states.
Abdullah said an issue of this nature should be decided at the national level.
He said Parliament represents the country as a whole.
The UCC seeks to establish a common set of personal laws covering areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
