Hyderabad, August 27: Onion prices have risen sharply, adding to the burden on consumers in Hyderabad and other markets.
White onions now cost nearly ₹100 per kg. Meanwhile, red onions sell for around ₹60 to ₹70 per kg.
Red onion prices have increased rapidly in recent months. Two months ago, traders sold red onions through vehicles at six kg for ₹100.
At that time, red onions cost about ₹20 per kg. The steep increase has now made the vegetable expensive for ordinary households.
The price rise has also affected household budgets. Many families are finding it difficult to buy onions in their usual quantities.
Onions form a common part of both vegetarian and non vegetarian meals. People also use them with chapatis, mirchi bajjis and other snacks.
Lower Supply Pushes Onion Prices Higher
Maharashtra remains a major source of onions supplied to markets in the region. However, poor rainfall there has affected onion cultivation and reduced supplies.
As a result, arrivals from Maharashtra have declined. Traders are now facing tighter supplies, which has contributed to the increase in market prices.
Retail prices can also vary based on quality, supply and local market conditions. However, consumers are already feeling the impact of the sharp rise.
The increase has particularly affected households that regularly use onions in cooking. Therefore, families are closely watching prices as supplies remain limited.
