Operation All Out: Mumbai Police Target Criminals in Mega Drive
In response to the shocking rape of a 26-year-old woman inside a stationary bus at Pune’s Swargate bus station, the Mumbai Police have launched a large-scale crackdown on criminals. Under ‘Operation All Out’, authorities took action at 207 locations, including 14 premises involved in gambling and other illegal activities.
Massive Police Action Across the City
Between February 28 at 11 PM and March 1 at 2:30 PM, police targeted thousands of suspects, including history-sheeters accused of crimes against women. The crackdown led to the arrest of 12 fugitives, while 54 individuals faced legal action for violating externment orders under Section 142 of the Mumbai Police Act. Additionally, 16 people were caught possessing illegal weapons, and 15 drug-related cases were registered. 56 individuals were also detained for engaging in suspicious activities.
Traffic and Security Measures Intensified
To ensure public safety, Mumbai Police set up 113 ‘nakabandi’ (checkpoints), where they examined 6,901 two-wheelers and penalized 1,891 drivers for traffic violations. Additionally, 70 people were caught driving under the influence. Authorities also served non-bailable warrants to 46 accused and issued standing warrants for the arrest of 25 suspects.
Enhanced Security at Bus Depots
Recognizing the need for improved safety at public transport hubs, police coordinated with ST and BEST bus depot managers to enhance security, improve lighting, and monitor suspicious individuals. Special security measures have also been implemented at Shivaji Nagar and Govandi bus depots, which are among Mumbai’s busiest.
Pune Bus Rape Case Update
The accused in the Pune bus station rape case, 37-year-old Dattatray Gade, remains in police custody until March 12. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar confirmed that Gade was caught hiding in a sugarcane farm using drone surveillance. He also attempted suicide before his arrest. Pawar assured that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice for the survivor.
Authorities have also warned against vandalizing public property, stating that strict action will be taken against those causing damage during protests related to the case.
