Islamabad, July 30: More than 30 civilians were reportedly killed and over 33 others injured after Pakistani security forces cracked down on protesters in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) during the past two days, according to government sources.
The protests have been led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) amid ongoing local body elections in PoK. Demonstrations have intensified over the past month over rising living costs, alleged administrative neglect, political discrimination and reported atrocities against minorities.
According to the sources, Pakistani security forces used lethal force during JAAC’s long march from Rawalakot to Muzaffarabad. The operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 30 civilians and left at least 33 protesters injured.
Among those killed was Usman Nazir, the brother of JAAC Central Committee member Umar Nazir.
The JAAC has appealed to the United Nations Human Rights Council and other international human rights organisations to conduct an independent investigation into the reported killings. It has also sought an immediate halt to the use of lethal force and accountability for any unlawful or excessive action by security personnel.
Government sources said the first phase of the regional elections in the Mirpur division witnessed voter turnout below 10 percent, citing independent reports. They claimed the official turnout figure of 45 percent did not reflect the ground situation, with several towns observing complete shutdowns in response to JAAC’s election boycott call.
The sources added that organisations, including the Jammu Kashmir National Students Federation, have criticised the reported use of force against protesters.
Security forces continue to maintain a heavy presence in Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and other parts of PoK to prevent further gatherings, the sources said.
They also alleged that communication restrictions and service suspensions remain in place across the region, limiting the flow of information and public access during the unrest.
Earlier this week, India described the local body elections in Pakistan occupied Kashmir as an attempt by Pakistan to legitimise what it called its illegal occupation of the territory while diverting attention from alleged human rights violations.
