Pakistan Is Just A Drop Away: India Preparing For Another Attack?

Delhi/Hyderabad, Dec 28 (Maxim News): It is known that after the Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. It also announced that it would suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. But now India is ready for another strategic plan. It will build a power project and a dam on the Chenab river. It has also prepared a plan in this regard. Going into details… a committee of experts from the Union Environment Ministry has examined this plan. It has given the green signal to the Dulbasti Stage 2 power project on the Chenab river.

It seems that the target is to generate 260 megawatts of electricity through this project. In fact, according to the Indus Water Treaty, the Chenab River falls under Pakistan’s jurisdiction. This means that Pakistan also has rights over this water. However, it seems that India’s plan to build a power project on that river is now causing concern for Pakistan.

This power project is being developed by the public sector undertaking NHPC Limited. It is estimated to cost Rs 3,277.45 crore. It is said that Dulhasti Stage 2 will utilize the existing infrastructure of Dulhasti Stage 1 project. Dulhasti Stage 1 was built with 390 MW. It was commissioned in 2007. However, since water is required for the Dulhasti Stage 2 project, in this phase, water from the Marusudar river will be brought to the Dulhasti dam through the Pakal Dul project.

India and Pakistan share the Chenab river basin under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. The committee found that the Dulhastu Stage 2 project was also planned in accordance with the provisions of the treaty. Earlier, according to this treaty, the waters of the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers were under the control of Pakistan. The Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers were under the control of India. Although the western rivers were allocated to Pakistan. India can use those rivers for irrigation, power generation and domestic purposes subject to certain conditions.

However, after the Centre suspended the Indus River Treaty, it decided to accelerate the hydropower projects in the river basin. These projects include Sawalkot, Ratle, Bursar, Pakal Dul, Kwar, Kiru, Keertai 1 and 2. On the other hand, there are already large hydropower projects in the Chenab river basin. There are 390 MW Dulhasti 1, 890 MW Baglihar, and 690 MW Salal projects. Also, projects like Rattle (850 MW), Kiru (624 MW), and Kwar (540 MW) are currently under construction. Now the Centre is planning to build the Dulhasti Stage 2 project.

Dulhasti Stage 2 requires 60.3 hectares of land. For this, it is reported that 8.26 hectares of private land belonging to 62 families in Banjwar and Palmar villages of Kishtwar district will be acquired. Compensation and rehabilitation facilities will be provided to the affected families. The environmental clearance has also been granted for the Dulhasti Stage 2 project. Experts believe that the construction of another project on the Chenab river is a matter of concern for Pakistan.  (Maxim News)
