New Delhi, June 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office and surpassing the record of Jawaharlal Nehru.
The milestone comes as Modi completes 12 years at the helm of the Central government, having secured consecutive electoral mandates in 2014, 2019, and 2024.
PM Modi Becomes Longest Serving Elected Prime Minister
According to the comparison based on elected tenure, Nehru served as Prime Minister from 1952 after India’s first general elections. His earlier period in office between 1947 and 1952 as head of the interim government is not included in this calculation.
While former PrimeMinister Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not continuous. As a result, Modi has become the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in the country’s history.
During his tenure, the government has overseen several major infrastructure and development projects. These include the New Parliament Building, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat Express, Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat RRTS, and the Ganga Expressway.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance is scheduled to hold a meeting at Bharat Mandapam on Wednesday to mark 12 years of the NDA government and celebrate the Prime Minister’s achievement.
The meeting is expected to be attended by senior leaders, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers from NDA governed states and Union Territories, and alliance partners. Sources said the alliance is likely to adopt a resolution congratulating Modi on the milestone.
Senior leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J. P. Nadda, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan are expected to participate in the event.
