Melbourne, July 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand welcome from the Indian diaspora at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium during his Australia visit, with more than 30,000 people attending the ‘Melbourne Meets Modi’ community event.
The stadium was filled to capacity as members of the Indian community gathered to welcome the Prime Minister. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the event and formally welcomed Modi.
Addressing the gathering, Modi thanked the Australian government, Prime Minister Albanese and the Indian diaspora for the warm reception. He also recalled his earlier interactions with the Indian community in Sydney.
Modi said Ahmedabad is home to the world’s largest cricket stadium, while Melbourne is known for its iconic sporting venues. Referring to the packed Marvel Stadium, he remarked that the event was “houseful” and a “blockbuster,” drawing loud cheers from the audience.
Highlighting bilateral ties, the Prime Minister said India and Australia now share stronger relations than ever before. He added that the Indian diaspora has played a significant role in strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
Modi also noted that several areas in Melbourne are increasingly being recognised as “Mini India” because of the growing Indian community.
Speaking at the event, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Modi as a visionary leader and a close friend. He said India’s rapid economic growth under Modi’s leadership has enhanced its global standing and praised the expanding partnership between Australia and India.
