PM Modi | Hyderabad, Oct. 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished Pope Leo XIV a full and speedy recovery following his successful thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Modi expressed his wishes for the Pope’s recovery and continued good health. The message followed the Pope’s surgery on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung using a video-assisted technique. Vatican News reported that tissue examined during the operation confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, which doctors had suspected from preoperative tests.

The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes, and doctors reported no complications. After a brief observation period, Pope Leo XIV was taken to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor.
Doctors are expected to conduct further examinations of the removed tissue in the coming days.
Modi’s message reflects his earlier engagement with the Vatican. In May 2025, he congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as head of the Catholic Church and spiritual leader of Catholics worldwide.
At the time, Modi highlighted the importance of peace, harmony, solidarity and service. He also reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue and engagement with the Holy See to advance shared values.
