Pocharam Unanimously Chosen As Speaker
Hyderabad, Jan.17 (Maxim News): With CM K Chandrashekhar Rao’s decision TRS senior leader and former Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy from Nizamabad has filed his nomination for Speaker’s post in the Assembly. Pocharam will be the second Speaker in Telangana State after first Telangana Speaker was S Madhusudana Chary.
Srinivas Reddy was only the leader, who filed the nomination at the behest of KCR for the Speaker post and got support from all the Opposition parties i.e. the Congress, the MIM and the BJP. With this, the election of the speaker is just a formality and will be officially announced as Speaker on January 18 in the House by Pro-tem Speaker Mumtaz Ahmed in the House at 11 am. Earlier, KCR made a call to these parties and sought their support for unanimous election of the Speaker in the House. While the MIM and the BJP readily agreed to the proposal, the Congress on Thursday extended its support for the same.
As leader of the House KCR signed the proposal seconded by Congress senior leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, other leaders Ahmed Balala, Rekha Naik, Abraham and Talasani Srinivas Yadav. TRS woman MLA Rekha Naik is to become Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
Pocharam Srinivas Reddy was born on February 10, 1949 and began his political career with the Congress. He later joined the TDP in 1984 but quit the party in 2011 to join the TRS to actively participate in separate Telangana state movement. Pocharam has vast experience as a legislator and has served as minister thrice – twice in the TDP Government and once as Agriculture Minister in KCR’s cabinet in 2014.
In 1994, he contested from the Banswada Assembly constituency as a TDP candidate and won with a majority of over 57,000 votes. But he lost in 2004 against Bajireddy Govardhan of the Congress. In support of separate Telangana Movement, Pocharam joined TRS party in March 2011 and resigned from his MLA seat and TDP membership. He went on to contest that year’s by-elections and won with a margin of over 49,000 votes against INC candidate Sangam Srinivas Goud. He was made a Politburo member of the TRS on March 24, 2011.
In 2014 Telangana Assembly Elections, Srinivas Reddy was re-elected from Banswada Assembly Constituency. He was inducted into KCR Cabinet on June 2, 2014 and made Agriculture Minister. (Maxim News)
