Hyderabad: Police have suspended a constable in Mancherial district for allegedly assaulting his wife and abusing her by taking her caste name. The incident took place at Reddy Colony on Sunday night. Officials said the accused was in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident. The suspension order was issued on Monday night.
According to official orders, the suspended constable has been identified as D Ravi Prasad. He was attached to the Mancherial town police station. Ramagundam Commissioner of Police Amber Kishore Jha issued the suspension orders. Meanwhile, police registered a case against Ravi Prasad following a complaint lodged by his wife, Shirisha.
Police said the case was booked under the SC ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The action followed allegations that the constable abused his wife by taking her caste name and assaulted her. Therefore, authorities placed him under suspension with immediate effect. Investigations into the case are currently underway, officials confirmed.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media platforms. The clip, which was widely shared on WhatsApp, caused embarrassment to the police department. In the video, Ravi Prasad is seen in an inebriated condition and wearing only undergarments. He is also seen dragging Shirisha onto the street from their residence and assaulting her. Meanwhile, Shirisha is seen crying helplessly while holding a toddler.
Police sources said differences had reportedly cropped up between the couple a few years ago. However, no further details about the nature of the disputes were provided. The focus of the investigation remains on the incident that occurred on Sunday night and the allegations mentioned in the complaint.
Shirisha is a superintendent with the Telangana State Special Police 13th Battalion at Gudipet. She hails from a Scheduled Caste. Police said she married Ravi Prasad, who belongs to a different community, after they fell in love six years ago. Meanwhile, authorities stressed that strict action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The suspension of the police constable comes amid concerns over misconduct by uniformed personnel. Officials reiterated that such acts would not be tolerated. They also stated that the law would take its course without exception. Further developments in the case are awaited as the investigation continues.
