President Murmu conveyed her wishes to citizens and followers of Lord Buddha.
She said his teachings of kindness, compassion and non violence remain relevant today.
She added that these values can help address challenges faced by society.
She urged people to adopt Buddha’s ideals to build a peaceful society.
Prime Minister Modi also greeted the nation on the occasion.
He reaffirmed commitment to the principles of peace, harmony and compassion.
He said the day inspires people to follow the path shown by Buddha.
According to tradition, Buddha Purnima marks the birth of Siddhartha Gautama.
He was born in Lumbini in present day Nepal in the fifth century BC.
He later attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.
The day is observed on the full moon of the Vaishakh month.
