Chandigarh, August 4: Punjab Police have busted two alleged ISI-backed cross-border terror modules and arrested nine persons, including four juveniles, in a major counter-terrorism operation in Amritsar.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the operation on Tuesday, stating that police recovered:
- Three illegal pistols
- Four petrol bottle bombs
- Nine live cartridges
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused were allegedly acting on the instructions of foreign-based handlers linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Police said the handlers were attempting to recruit local youth to:
- Carry out terror-related activities
- Conduct surveillance of security installations
- Procure illegal weapons
- Disrupt public peace
Investigators also uncovered the installation of surveillance cameras near railway tracks. Police alleged that footage captured by these cameras was shared with foreign handlers as part of the network’s operations.
Cases have been registered at the following police stations in Amritsar:
- Mohkampur Police Station
- Airport Police Station
- C-Division Police Station
Punjab Police said further investigations are underway to identify other members of the alleged network, establish its forward and backward linkages, trace the financial trail and determine whether the accused were involved in other terror-related activities.
Authorities are also examining the role of the foreign-based handlers in coordinating the alleged operations.
