PV Sindhu Creates History After Historic Japan Open Title Win

Internet, July 19: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu became emotional after winning the Japan Open Super 750 title, saying her belief in herself helped her overcome difficult phases and end a long wait for a major championship.

Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win the Japan Open title. She defeated Japan’s Yamaguchi in straight games, 21-17, 21-17, in the final.

Calling the victory special, Sindhu said she had worked tirelessly for the title and was overwhelmed with emotion after the final.

“This win is very special to me. I have been working hard for a long time. Tears of joy came to my eyes after the victory. I have been waiting for this title for the last 19 months,” she said.

Sindhu added that she ignored doubts about her future and continued to trust her abilities.

“Many people wondered whether my career was over. I never lost faith in myself. I always believed I could do it, and that belief brought me this victory,” she said.

She also thanked her coaches, parents, husband and in-laws for supporting her throughout her journey.

The Japan Open title is Sindhu’s first major championship since winning the Syed Modi International in December 2024. It is also her biggest title since claiming gold at the 2019 BWF World Championships.

Looking ahead, Sindhu said the victory has boosted her confidence before the BWF World Championships, scheduled to be held in India from August 17 to 23.

She has already won five medals at the World Championships. A sixth medal would make her the first woman to win six medals in the women’s singles event.

Sindhu said maintaining her current form, confidence and composure will be crucial in the upcoming tournament.

She added that her attacking style remains her biggest strength and believes reducing unforced errors will help her gain greater control in matches.
