PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh lead Indian contingent at Commonwealth Games opening ceremony

Birmingham, July 29: The Indian delegation was led by Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh, the captain of the men’s hockey team, as the Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony took place in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Thursday.

Neeraj Chopra was supposed to carry the Indian flag at the opening ceremony, however the silver medalist in the world athletics championships suffered an injury. Due to the injury, he was forced to withdraw from CWG 2022.

Along with Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu, the team also includes Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. the 2018 Asian Games gold medalists Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Hima Das, and Amit Panghal, as well as the reigning CWG champions Manika Batra and Vinesh Phogat.

215 competitors from India will compete in 141 events across 19 different sporting disciplines.

This year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will feature women’s T20I cricket, with the top eight teams vying for the gold medal.

On Friday against Australia, the Indian women’s cricket team will play in their first CWG match. Ghana will be the opponent for the women’s hockey squad.

At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, which begin on Friday, more than 5,000 competitors are prepared to compete despite the absence of numerous track and field superstars.

In total, 1,875 medals will be awarded across all sporting competitions, and for the first time ever in a multisport, international event, there will be more women’s competitions than men’s.

The Commonwealth Games have 136 gold medals for female athletes and 134 gold medals for male competitors.

66 medals were won by India in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. 2010 saw India’s finest showing at the Commonwealth Games. India took home 101 medals in 2010, including 38 gold ones.
