Ramzan Ghota Makers Get Busy in Hyderabad Old City
- Ramzan preparations boost ghota making in Old City
- Haleem demand drives ghota orders ahead of Ramzan
The Ramzan month is nearing, and activity has increased in Hyderabad’s Old City as ghota makers prepare for the season. The sight of large ghotas lined up outside the shop of Mohd Anwar signals the arrival of Ramzan. These tools play a key role in haleem preparation, which sees high demand during the holy month.
On the narrow Chatta Bazaar road, the ghota shop run by Mohd Anwar is well known among hoteliers. The workshop becomes busy nearly six weeks before the start of Ramzan. During this period, Anwar focuses on making ghotas, which are hammers used for beating wheat and mutton while cooking haleem. As Ramzan approaches, orders from hotels across the city increase steadily.
“I start work six weeks to two months before the Ramzan month. During this period, I prepare close to 500 ghotas and supply them to hotels in the city,” said Mohd Anwar. His statement reflects the scale of preparation required ahead of the fasting month, when haleem kitchens operate for long hours every day.
Meanwhile, Anwar has been involved in the ghota making vocation for nearly four decades. Over the years, his shop has earned a strong reputation. Hoteliers from different parts of the city visit his workshop to buy ghotas made from various kinds of wood. These ghotas come in different sizes and are made using babul tree and beef wood.
“Ghota plays a key role in the preparation of Haleem. With the help of ghota, all of the ingredients of the haleem get crushed well and the meat gets threaded finely. With the continuous smashing of haleem for nearly 8-10 hours with this ghota, the haleem gets its velvety texture,” explained Mohd Anwar. His explanation highlights why hotels rely on well crafted ghotas during Ramzan.
Also, several large hoteliers in Telangana and Karnataka place their orders weeks before Ramzan. According to Anwar, demand does not come only during the season. “A few hotels have asked me to supply the ghota regularly,” he said. Therefore, as Ramzan nears, ghota makers like Anwar remain central to the haleem tradition in Hyderabad’s Old City.
