Reporter Subhan: Urdu Journalists Slam Arrest, Seek Case Withdrawal

Reporter Subhan | Hyderabad, June 12 (Maxim News)  The Telangana Urdu Working Journalists Federation (TUWJF) has strongly condemned the arrest of renowned Urdu journalist Muhammad Subhan (Reporter Subhan), and has demanded the immediate drop of cases registered against him.

Terming it an attack on freedom of the press, the federation said that this action by the Hyderabad Police is a serious violation of the fundamental rights of journalists.

A resolution in this regard was unanimously passed in an emergency meeting held under the leadership of TUWJ Federation President and former Member Press Council of India, M.A. Majid.

In the meeting, the federation clarified that the arrest of Reporter Subhan is not only an action against an individual journalist, but it is a dangerous message for the entire journalistic community. President MA Majid said, “Reporter Subhan was targeted for sharing a video of an incident that took place in Musheerabad on social media, which is part of his journalistic duties. The police’s claim that the video has angered the public is an attempt to suppress freedom of the press.”

He added that a delegation of the federation would soon meet the Telangana Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, and submit a memorandum, demanding that such actions against journalists be avoided and the cases registered against reporter Subhan be dropped. The federation stressed that journalists should have complete freedom to perform their professional duties and that it is unacceptable to subject them to unnecessary legal action.

It may be noted that reporter Subhan was arrested by the Hyderabad police on Sunday night on the charge of making a video of an incident that took place in Musheerabad and sharing it on social media. He was summoned by the task force to the police station and, after several hours of interrogation, produced before a magistrate, where he was granted bail. However, the federation maintains that the arrest is an attempt to restrict journalistic freedom and should be stopped immediately.

The meeting was attended by TUWJ Federation General Secretary Syed Ghouse Mohiuddin, along with other members, including Syed Ahmed Jilani, MAK Faisal, Muhammad Liaquddin, Muhammad Abdul Mohsin, Muhammad Farooq Ali, Amjad Ali, Mirza Ghani Baig, and Syed Wajid Hussaini, Farhad Khaleel, Mohammad Amjad Ali and Mirza Ayesha Butool who raised their voices in support of reporter Subhan.

The Telangana Urdu Working Journalists’ Federation has appealed to all concerned authorities to ensure the protection of journalistic freedom and immediately drop the cases registered against reporter Subhan. (Maxim News)
