New Delhi, Sept. 29: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will organise the SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivir on September 30 as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.
The event will be held in hybrid mode at the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium, Dr S.P.M. Civic Centre, New Delhi. Urban and rural local bodies and government departments across the country will participate virtually.
The campaign, running from September 17 to October 17, carries the theme Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.
Shivir to Focus on SafaiMitra Welfare and Safety
The programme, themed Samman Safai Mitron Ka, Sankalp Swachh Bharat Ka, aims to recognise sanitation workers and improve their access to healthcare, safety equipment and social protection.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will attend as the chief guest. Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar, Minister of State B L Verma and Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi will attend as guests of honour.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, Joint Secretary of the ministry Sandeep R Rathod and NSKFDC Managing Director P K Singh will also attend the programme.
The Shivir will provide a single-window platform to connect sanitation workers and their families with welfare services. Activities will include preventive health check-ups, medical screening and the distribution and demonstration of personal protective equipment (PPE).
The programme will also feature a film on the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme. It will highlight initiatives to improve sanitation workers’ safety, dignity and social security.
Officials will facilitate the distribution of NAMASTE identity cards to validated waste pickers. They will also help eligible sanitation workers access central and state government welfare schemes.
These include housing assistance under PMAY, water connections through the Jal Jeevan Mission, healthcare under Ayushman Bharat and insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana.
Other initiatives include the Swachh Bharat Mission, PM Ujjwala Yojana, PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Mission Indradhanush and Swachhata Udyami Yojana. Benefits will be provided subject to eligibility.
The programme will also recognise sanitation workers for their contributions to public health, cleanliness and community welfare.
Participants will take the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan pledge, reaffirming their commitment to a drug-free society and raising awareness about substance abuse.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve sanitation workers’ access to healthcare, safety equipment and social protection while promoting the goals of Swachh Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
