Authorities have declared a holiday for schools and colleges across several districts of Maharashtra on Tuesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state.
The decision comes after relentless rain over the past three days disrupted normal life in Mumbai and adjoining districts, causing severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and rain-related incidents.
Orange Alert for Thane
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Thane district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds on July 7.
Considering the risk of flooding, falling trees, and traffic congestion, the district administration has ordered the closure of all Anganwadis, schools, and colleges to ensure the safety of students.
Nashik, Palghar Also Declare Holiday
An extremely heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Nashik district, particularly in Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri, Peth, and Dindori.
The district administration has declared a holiday for educational institutions in Nashik Rural, Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri, Peth, and Dindori talukas, as well as schools within the Nashik Municipal Corporation limits. Weekly markets in the affected areas will also remain closed.
In Palghar district, where torrential rain has continued unabated, authorities have announced a holiday for all schools as a precautionary measure.
Pune, Navi Mumbai and Ratnagiri Affected
In Pune district, schools in the Western Ghats region—including Maval, Mulshi, Bhor, Velhe, and Ambegaon talukas—will remain closed due to heavy rainfall. However, educational institutions in Pune city and other talukas will function normally.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also announced a holiday for all schools under its jurisdiction.
Authorities in Ratnagiri district have similarly ordered the closure of educational institutions in view of the severe weather forecast.
Authorities Urge Caution
The IMD has advised residents to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of Maharashtra.
District administrations have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged and flood-prone areas, and follow official weather advisories until conditions improve.
