There is a provision that a by-election should be held within six months if any member dies.  However, in the background of the nearing Lok Sabha election schedule will be published in the next 15 days,  there is a lot of confusion locally as to whether it is possible to hold cantonment by-elections along with Lok Sabha. It is known that the authorities have already started working on the conduct of the Lok Sabha elections.

Some are of the opinion that if this process is completed before the release of the election schedule, the cantonment by-election will be possible along with the Lok Sabha elections. Arguments are being heard that even after the release of the schedule, there is a possibility of announcing a special schedule for the cantonment by-election.
